Handicap International is an international solidarity organization specialized in the field of disability. Non-governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit making, it works alongside people with disabilities, whatever the context, offering them assistance and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant. The organization was created in France in 1982 and is now active in more than 60 countries. In 1997, the organization received, as a co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, the Nobel Prize of Peace for its action in favor of the victims of landmines.
Handicap International has been working in China for more than 12 years. Our objective is to improve the socio-economic inclusion of people with disabilities, especially in rural areas, trough pilot projects run in close cooperation with governmental partners, civil society and associations of people with disabilities. Our strategy is fully in line with the China Disabled Persons’ Federation’s strategy and with the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that was ratified by China in 2008. Current projects are located in Beijing, Guangxi, Sichuan, Tibet and Qinghai.
